John Pearse Hawaiian Lap Steel 15-34 Strings Pure Nickel C6 Tuning 7380
John Pearse was responsible for teaching a generation of music lovers how to play guitar, and his brand of acoustic guitar strings are everything you’d expect and more from such an iconic musical figure. Whether you’re into blues, bluegrass or folk, these strings are carefully crafted for players with serious aspirations. Not long after that, he became a sought-after session guitarist, and in 1978 he moved to the United States to design music products for the C.F. Martin Company. Of course, he soon began to make his own acoustic guitar strings, and they’re still very popular with folk and bluegrass musicians today.
John Pearse offers five series of acoustic guitar strings – 80/20 bronze, nickel, Nuage, phosphor bronze and silk/phosphor bronze.
C6th is the most popular tuning for lap steel, largely because of the ease of playing both major and minor chords. There is a lot of instructional material for this tuning, which was often called Am7 in older literature.
The John Pearse gauges feature a heavy plain G (.024), which matches tones nicely between the minor chord on strings 1, 2, 3, 5 (A minor) and the major chord on strings 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 (C major). Some people raise the low C to C# to include a 7th chord in the tuning (A7 on strings 3, 4, 5, 6).
